Known for his eclectic programs and brilliant performances, pianist and conductor David Greilsammer is recognized as one of today’s most audacious classical artists, with a repertoire ranging from Scarlatti and Mozart to Ligeti and Cage. In 2014, The New York Times selected his recital “Scarlatti: Cage: Sonatas” as one of the ten most-important musical events of the year, and awarded two of Greilsammer’s albums, “Baroque Conversations” (Sony Classical, 2012) and “Mozart-In-Between” (Sony Classical, 2013), the designation of one of the best recordings of the year.
In recent seasons, David Greilsammer has appeared with prestigious orchestras such as the San Francisco Symphony, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, Philharmonique de Radio-France, Taipei Philharmonic, Hamburger Symphoniker, Torino Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, and Israel Symphony. As a pianist, Greilsammer has appeared at the Ravinia, Mostly Mozart, and Verbier festivals, as well as at the Zürich Tonhalle, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Forbidden City Theatre in Beijing, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Kennedy Center in Washington.
An acclaimed interpreter of both baroque and contemporary music, David Greilsammer is also celebrated for his pioneering performances of Mozart. In 2008, he performed all of Mozart’s piano sonatas in a one-day marathon in Paris, and in recent years he has recorded various albums devoted to the composer’s lesser known works. In the 2012-2013 season, he played and conducted the complete cycle of Mozart’s twenty-seven piano concertos in Geneva.
Since 2013, Greilsammer has served as the Music and Artistic Director of the Geneva Camerata (GECA). With this innovative orchestra, he gives more than thirty concerts each season including international tours that have taken him and the ensemble to Paris, Berlin, London, Gstaad, Venice, and Istanbul. The orchestra has collaborated with soloists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Steven Isserlis, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Andreas Scholl, Avi Avital, and Daniel Hope, among others. Greilsammer and GECA regularly work with choreographers and visual artists as well as jazz, world, and rock musicians.
After releasing four critically acclaimed records on the Naïve label, in 2011 Greilsammer signed an exclusive contract with Sony Classical, resulting in three award-winning albums – both as pianist and conductor. His latest recording for Sony offers an unusual encounter between Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas for Keyboard and John Cage’s Sonatas for Prepared Piano.
Born in Jerusalem, David Greilsammer studied at the Juilliard School. He now makes his home in Geneva, Switzerland.
